  • Country: France
  • City: Strasbourg
  • Type: Multilateral
  • Scale: European
  • Category: Knowledge and information exchange
Description

The Alliance of European Cities against Violent Extremism is a platform of major EU city administrations and provides a European forum for sharing experience and information about promising practices and training programs. It has previously produced the Aarhus, Rotterdam and Barcelona declarations (between 2015 and 2017). The Alliance was set up by the Council of Europe's Congress of Local and Regional Authorities (CLRA) and EFUS (European Forum for Urban Security) in 2015 and follows the Council of Europe’s Action Plan on the fight against violent extremism and radicalisation leading to terrorism.

Coordination Patterns

The Alliance holds intermittent summits which are co-organised by the respective city administration where the summit takes places, and the Council of Europe's Congress of Local and Regional Authorities (CLRA) and EFUS (European Forum for Urban Security). At the Council of Europe's Congress of Local and Regional Authorities (CLRA) the Alliance is hosted under the auspices of the Current Affairs Committee.

Role of the EU

Several administrations of major cities located in EU member states form part of the Alliance. Moreover, the Alliance is supported by the Council of Europe (through its Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, CLRA) and EFUS (European Forum for Urban Security) which are both major partners for the EU in PVE/CVE work.

Relevance for the EU

Platform of city administrations which are key actors for PVE/CVE work and the implementation of respective policies and programmes.
